This is the four-week path we plan for a 12-year-old starting from zero, at Bheem Academy in Vyttila, Kochi. Each week ends with one finished thing. No prior coding is needed.
Before week 1: what a 12-year-old already brings
A 12-year-old does not need to know Python or even what a neural network is. They need curiosity and one rule from us: AI is a tool you direct, not an answer machine you copy from. Every week below is built on that rule. Our Junior AI Basics course covers AI fundamentals, machine learning, ChatGPT, Python and generative AI through hands-on projects, in English, for beginners.
Week 1: build an AI study buddy
The child learns to talk to an AI clearly: say who it is, what it should do, and what it should never do. By the end of the week they have a "study buddy" they wrote themselves, set up to explain a school topic in three steps and then quiz them on it.
What you can see at home: your child explaining their own prompt to you, and why one version worked better than another.
Week 2: make a short illustrated storybook
Now the child uses generative AI to create. They write the story idea and the characters, ask AI to draw the scenes, then edit the words and pictures until the story is theirs. The skill is judgement: spotting what the AI got wrong and fixing it.
What you can see at home: a 6-to-8 page storybook your child can read out loud, with their name on the cover.
Week 3: write a first Python quiz game
This is where "using AI" becomes "building with AI". With AI helping explain each line, the child writes a small Python quiz game: questions, a score, a message at the end. They learn what a variable, a loop and an if-statement do by changing them and watching the game react.
What you can see at home: a game that runs on the laptop and that your child can proudly lose to you at.
Week 4: train a first AI model and show it off
The last week is about how AI learns. The child collects a small set of examples, for instance pictures of two kinds of objects, trains a simple model to tell them apart, and finds out why it sometimes gets it wrong. The week ends with a short demo: the child presents their four projects to the class and to you.
What you can see at home: a child who can explain, in plain words, why more and better examples make an AI smarter.
What four weeks will not do
Four weeks will not make a 12-year-old an AI engineer. It gives them a foundation and the confidence to keep building. We would rather say that plainly than promise a career in a month.
Where it leads: from kids' basics to an agentic AI course
The four projects above are the first steps of a longer path. Agentic AI means AI that does a sequence of tasks on its own, such as researching, writing and sending, instead of answering one question at a time. It is where the jobs of the next decade are moving.
